Special Exhibit – Creating a Legacy: The Women of Grand Rapids
January 11 – August 31, 2010
Main Library – 111 Library St NE
This exhibit challenges that myth that women had little impact on public life in the city. This exhibit is not intended to showcase the most influential or outstanding women in Grand Rapids history, rather these individuals represent many time periods and areas of endeavor in which women have helped give our community its distinctive way of life. Meet Dr. Pearl Kendrik and Grace Eldering who created headlines across the nation when they developed the vaccine against whooping cough. Read about Elizabeth Eaglesfield, the first women to practice law in Grand Rapids. (She later obtained a captain’s license and ran a Great Lakes shipping company with her son!) Consider the accomplishments of Evangeline Lamberts, the first woman elected to the Grand Rapids City Commission in 1961. These and many others created a living legacy for the City of Grand Rapids.

Make Your Own Traditional Wooden Snowshoes at Ludington State Park

Yes, it’s a bit of a drive. But, how cool is THAT??? If you’ve got an older teen that loves the outdoors, this might be just up his or her … um… trail.

Make Your Own Traditional Wooden Snowshoes at Ludington State Park

Contact: Alan Wernette 231-843-9261
Agency: Department of Natural Resources

The Department of Natural Resources invites you to learn to weave a pair of traditional wooden snowshoes at Ludington State Park, using methods similar to those Native Americans used for generations.

“Snowshoes offer form and function; wear them to get through the snow this winter, show them off as a decoration or give them as a handmade gift,” said Ludington State Park Interpreter Alan Wernette, who teaches the snowshoe-making class. “Snowshoeing is an easy way to get outside and burn calories during the winter months and is an inexpensive and fun activity for all ages. If you can walk, you can snowshoe.”

The cost for making a pair of snowshoes ranges from $90 to $160 depending on the style. Cost includes the pre-formed wooden frames, lacing, top-of-the-line binding and personal instructions. Classes are designed to be fun and interesting.

All classes are held at Ludington State Park’s Warming Shelter. Because this activity requires concentration over long periods of time, it is suggested for ages 16 and older. Note that some of the classes are split over two days.

Classes are scheduled for:

Oct. 17 and 18, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Oct. 26 and 27, 6:30 to 10 p.m.
Nov. 8, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Nov. 14, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Nov. 23 and 24, 6:30. to 10 p.m.
Dec. 8, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Dec. 20, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Jan. 7 and 8, 6:30 to 10 p.m.
Jan. 25 and 26, 6:30 to 10 p.m.

Class size is limited and reservations are required. To make a reservation, please call Ludington State Park at (231) 843-9261 or e-mail wernettea@michigan.gov.

A motor vehicle permit is required when entering the state park. Permits are $6 for the day or $24 for an annual permit, which is valid at any state park.

Ranger’s Apprentice Bus Tour: Escape to Araluen

The Alpine Schuler Books & Music (3165 Alpine Ave.)
Friday, September 25th
7:00PM

FlanaganJohn Flanagan’s Ranger’s Apprentice Series has been hailed for its originality and appeal to reluctant teen readers for years, and now, the series truly comes alive. Actors from the Striking Viking Story Pirates are boarding a lavishly painted bus and travelling cross country, visiting bookstores, libraries, and schools to act out the greatest scenes from the series. Interacting with the audience, the Story Pirates will incorporate lights, sound effects, music, and prizes to introduce characters and reenact moments from Flanagan’s first novel, The Ruins of Gorlan. Fans of the series will love the adventure and the performances are wonderful introductions to the series for new readers.

The action begins with the Story Pirates taking the stage, followed by a book signing session during which all members of the audience who’ve purchased books will receive exclusive Rangers pins and stamps. Guests should arrive early to find a seat close to the action and enjoy a night of escapist adventure.

Teen Songwriting Workshops – Wed 6/17

Copied whole from the Grand Rapids Public Library blog:

Today was your first chance to attend a songwriting workshop here at the library.  Don’t worry, though!  You have two more chances on Wednesday.  The Yankee Clipper branch is hosting on at 3pm and the Main Library is hosting one at 6pm.  Bring your poems or songs in to be critiqued and to share with others or, if you are a beginner, bring your love of music.  These workshops are open to teens ages 11 – 18.

Having American Idol withdrawal?  After attending the workshop, sign up to perform (or have someone perform for you!) an original song that you have written at our GRPL Idol.  This night of music will be on Thursday, August 13 at 7pm in the Ryerson Auditorium.  Listeners are also invited to attend to hear some great local artists.  The winner of the contest will receive 4 hours of studio time to record their songs at Mackinaw Harvest Music Group.

NOTE: I corrected to date in the title to the correct date – Wed 6/17

Auto Upkeep Training Materials

Driver’s Ed is coming up (way too) swiftly for my son. The Auto Upkeep Program will be part and parcel of  the many hoops he is going to be jumping through before he gets his license (and subsequently jacks my car insurance rates into the stratosphere). There are 20 chapters ranging across the spectrum of basic car care, maintenance and repair:

  1. Introduction and How Cars Work
  2. Buying an Automobile
  3. Automotive Expenses
  4. Repair Facilities
  5. Safety Around the Automobile
  6. Basic Tools
  7. Auto Care and Cleaning
  8. Fluid Level Check
  9. Electrical System
  10. Lubrication System
  11. Fuel System
  12. Cooling System and Climate Control
  13. Ignition System
  14. Suspension, Steering, and Tires
  15. Braking System
  16. Drive-train
  17. Exhaust and Emission System
  18. Alternative Fuels and Designs
  19. Automotive Accessories
  20. Common Problems and Roadside Emergencies

Who knows, maybe he’ll be able to do some of the routine maintenance on my car as a way to help “pay down” those outrageous new car insurance premiums.
